Tour details
The Gede ruins are the remnants of a Swahili town that was common along the East African Coast. Originating in the twelfth century, it was later reconstructed with new city walls in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Located in Kilifi District, Coast Province, Gede sits 16 km south of Malindi and about 90 km northeast of Mombasa. The reconstruction of Gede is linked to the migration of many Kilwa residents to Mombasa, Malindi, and other coastal areas. As the town's population grew, it became prosperous, reaching its zenith in the fifteenth century. The wealth of the town is evident from the extensive ruins, including several mosques, a grand palace, and numerous houses, all set within a 45-acre expanse of ancient forest. Malindi Marine National Reserve, situated off Kenya’s coast in the Indian Ocean, is considered the oldest marine reserve in Africa. Located near Malindi, approximately 118 km north of Mombasa, it is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The reserve encompasses the Malindi Marine Park and, together with the Watamu Marine National Reserve, offers a stunning stretch of Kenya's coastline. Visitors can enjoy activities ranging from swimming with zebra fish to windsurfing. The reserve boasts a wealth of natural resources, including fringing reefs, coral gardens within lagoons, seagrass beds, mudflats, mangroves, marine mammals, turtles, and various species of shorebirds. The Marafa Colored Canyons, also known as Hell's Kitchen, are a unique sandstone formation located outside Malindi, Kenya. Locally referred to as Nyari, meaning "the place broken by itself," this area was once a vast sandstone ridge shaped into a series of rugged gorges by wind, rain, and floods. The canyon's striking layer-cake colors showcase hues of white, pink, orange, and deep crimson. At sunset, these vibrant tones become even more vivid, as the ribbed sandstone gullies reflect and are enhanced by the setting sun. Mambrui Dunes is a hidden treasure featuring the spectacular white sand dunes, which are unique to Kenya. Situated on either side of the Malindi-Lamu Highway, it is just 6 km from Malindi town and a 21-minute drive from Malindi International Airport.
